Synopsis:
In the shadow of 19th-century India's rigid caste system, a young Jyotirao Phule (born 1827), a gardener's son from the Mali caste, witnesses the brutal inequities of a society ruled by Brahminical orthodoxy. Scarred by the humiliation of being ousted from a friend's wedding due to his "low" birth and enraged by the sight of widows forced into despair and untouchables denied dignity, he vows to ignite a revolution. With his spirited wife, Savitribai, by his side-a woman he defiantly educates despite societal scorn-they embark on a radical mission to shatter centuries of oppression. The film follows their audacious journey - opening India's first school for girls in 1848 in Pune, facing stones and threats from upper-caste mobs, yet persisting to teach the marginalized-girls, Shudras, and Dalits-reading, writing, and the power of self-worth. As Jyotirao pens fiery critiques like *Gulamgiri* (1873), likening India's caste system to slavery, and forms the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth Seekers), the couple becomes a beacon for the downtrodden and a target for the powerful. Amid personal sacrifices-ostracism, poverty, and the loss of their home-they establish an orphanage to save abandoned infants and champion widow remarriage, challenging every norm that binds their people. Climactic tension builds as Jyotirao confronts Brahmin priests and British indifference, his health failing after a stroke in 1888, yet his spirit unyielding until his death in 1890. Savitribai carries the torch forward, her resolve cementing their legacy. Phule is a stirring tale of courage, love, and defiance-a testament to two visionaries who dared to dream of an India where knowledge and justice triumph over birth and tradition.
